Mangrove Planting with ECO

April 6, 1-4 pm

Student Government ECO Agency, in partnership with Coral Gables Vice Mayor, Rhonda Anderson, and Miami Dade County Artist in Residence, Xavier Cortada, will be planting mangroves along one of our canals. Mangroves have long been described as the best natural buffer against sea level rise and storm surge impacts. Volunteering opportunities are limited.

Arbor Day Concert

April 18 at 6 pm

The University has been recognized as a Tree Campus USA by the nationally renown organization Arbor Day Foundation for the tenth consecutive year! The program will start on April 18 at 6 pm, at the Arboretum Stone Circle, with our land acknowledgement, don't miss the free concert from Frost School of Music artist Jasmine Harris and her band. Finger food will be served. Event sponsored by the Gifford Arboretum.

Adopt a Plant with ECO

April 23rd, from 1-3 pm

Learn about local native ecosystems and edibles. Pass by the Breezeway and register for one of ECO' s planting events in April. ECO will be giving away plants that were grown on the on-campus grow walls!

Honey, it’s sunny!

As a summer send off, students can learn about the benefits of reef-safe sunscreen and grab their own! Additionally, in support of Florida’s pollinators, students can taste a variety of local honey. Pass by the ECO Table a the Lakeside Canopy between 3-5 pm!

Ray Santamaria is the proud owner of honeybee colonies certified by the Apiary Division of the Florida Dpt of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Come share Ray's passion, and learn the basics of bee keeping with the experts!

Visit to FPL Miami-Dade Solar Energy Center

April 24, 11 am - 12 pm

The FPL SolarTogether program, which is one of the nation’s largest solar energy programs, provides organizations like the University of Miami, the opportunity to help reduce energy costs and achieve sustainability goals – on its journey to Carbon Neutrality. Join us on a tour of FPL’s Miami-Dade Solar Energy Center in SW Miami-Dade. Spots are limited and first come, first served. Address and additional details including carpooling option will be provided in a confirmation email once you RSVP. Note: Personal Protective Equipment (hard hat, safety glasses) will be provided by FPL at the site. You must wear long pants and flat, closed-toe shoes for our safety. There are no restrooms on the site. Please plan accordingly.

'Canes Day of Service

April 20, 9 am-12 pm

Join our team of alumni and students for a day of planting and gardening at the U! Small groups of volunteers will help beautify various green spaces of the Coral Gables campus. Student Government ECO Agency, in partnership with Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden will be planting a Florida Native Butterfly Garden! Bring closed shoes, a hat, a reusable bottle and some elbow grease! Volunteering opportunities are limited.

On April 22 from 10:30 am-2 pm, pass by the Lakeside Patio, learn about the great work that students, faculty, staff, vendors, and community partners are doing to make this Planet and this University a better, greener place! Resilience in the Built and Natural Environments

April 24, 9 am-5 pm

The built and natural environments are critical for our efforts to build resilience. Smart land-use, robust infrastructure and healthy ecosystem services are key capacities of equitable, sustainable and resilient communities. Many South Florida projects are deploying nature-based responses for infrastructure and officials are considering modifications to zoning and building regulations to reduce vulnerability and risk.

The GREEN Games

April 25, 5-7 pm, Lakeside Patio

Founded in 2012, ECO Agency is the umbrella organization under Student Government that has been promoting sustainable living at the U and left a legacy of green projects all over campus. The GREEN Games Award ceremony is a competition where student orgs will volunteer to design sustainability projects, create sustainable artworks, and get involved off campus to earn points. On April 25, teams will present their works and projects. The award ceremony will include a keynote speaker and catered food. Learn more, contact ECO Agency!

Native Planting with ECO

April 28, 1-3 pm

Student Government ECO Agency, in partnership with Miami Dade County Artist in Residence Xavier Cortada will be planting a native butterfly garden along one of our canals. This natural ecosystem will promote biodiversity, mental health and wellbeing on our campus. Volunteering opportunities are limited.

Compost 101

April 29, 4:30-5:30 pm

Composting is the next evolution of recycling. Redirecting food waste from landfills create less methane, while returning nutrients from food scrap to the soil through compost application in your vegetable garden.

    A coalition of environmental and community outreach programs aiming to effect change through creative measures - UThrift will be doing the annual locker clean out, but this year donating to a local homeless shelter. We are encouraging students to do their closet clean out at this time to give back to the local community. We will also be crocheting plastic bags into reusable, antimicrobial mats for the homeless community. Other organizations are collaborating and giving back in their own ways. (Red Cross, Period, and ULUXE)

    Flags for Fallen Vets

    Join the Veterans ’Canes Society for a day to honor our fallen vets! Together we will ensure an American Flag is placed upon EVERY Veterans Grave Site at EACH National Cemetery in the Country for Memorial Day. Tools: (brought by volunteers): gloves, hat, sunscreen, ruler or measuring tape, screwdriver, and hammer. Each ticket includes flags
