Communication Coordinator

The Office of Sustainability’s mission is to educate staff, faculty, students, alumni and the community at large about the benefits of adopting sustainable practices and behaviors across the institution.Candidates are typically graduate or undergraduate students from the School of Communication.

Hours: 14 hours per week
Hourly Rate: $20/hour
Start Date: Aug 26, 2024

Job Description: The Coordinator will

  • Monitor, promote and enhance the programs offered by the Office of Sustainability.
  • Design innovative strategies to achieve awareness and behavioral change for sustainability performance
  • Film, edit, and promote short videos to highlight sustainable practices on campus
  • Interview students, faculty, and staff who are sustainability role models at UM.
  • Post reels and pictures on Green U’s social media accounts to engage and inform the university community and train the custodial staff.
  • Review the OS website and Newsletter and offer the Sustainability manager a series of recommendations aligning with OS goals.
  • Document Green U events on campus (Earth Day, World Water Day, Arbor Day, etc.)
  • Engage students, faculty and staff to increase the monthly newsletter listserv, and followers on social media accounts.
  • Tik Tok and Instagram account miantenance to bump up the number of UM followers

Job Requirements

Education:

  • Graduate or Undergraduate Student in Communication
  • Specializing in Filming, Social Media Strategy, Public Relations preferred

 Knowledge, Skills:

  • Utilize Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Suite and Adobe Premiere
  • Good organizational skills, detail oriented, multi-tasker, flexible schedule, dependable
  • Good communication skills both oral and written.
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment

Garden / Compost Coordinator 

Unpaid “For Credit” internship position
Hours: 12 hours per week
Start Date: Aug 26, 2024 for 1 semester.

Job description:

  • Student will dedicate 9 h as coordinator in the garden following faculty adviser and Sustainability office list of maintenance.
  • Student will dedicate 3 h as Compost coordinator. This task involves some physical work and safety guidelines to follow. The Coordinator will track and manage the flow of veggie scrap coming to the garden and help volunteers with basic training.
  • Student will help the office of Sustainability organize, promote and assess events on campus and mainly in the garden
  • Organize 1 event per semester in the Sustainability Garden, partnering with ECO Agency Botany committee, with the CommUnity Garden Club and with the Gifford Arboretum.


Skills required:

  • Must agree to help with some light physical work linked to event logistics and garden/composting duties.
  • Must have excellent people skills in order to build positive relationships with staff, students and stakeholders.
  • Must have good leadership skills and lead by Example.
  • Must be able to multi-task with strong prioritization, scheduling and delegation abilities.
  • Has intermediate to advanced knowledge of data analysis and business software (to include: Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel).
  • Horticulture knowledge is a plus


Other requirements:

  • The student needs to be pursuing an undergraduate degree at UM (ECS, Sustainability certificate, minor or program preferred)
  • The student will agree to work 12 hours a week
  • The student will need to confirm that her faculty advisor agreed to award academic credits for the internship.

Green Athletics Liaison

The UM Office of Sustainability is looking for an undergraduate student for the position of Green Athletics Liaison. Watch Lou Hedley (NFL Saints) talk about his experience as UM Green Athletics Liaison

This is a "for credit", unpaid position, 12 h/ week, starting Aug 26, 2024 for 1 semester.

Applicants need to be either a student athlete or a student in the Sports Administration Department (minor in any sustainability focused department is a plus).

  • The Green Athletics Liaison will help establish, monitor and evaluate the Initiatives planned by the Office of Sustainability.
  • The Green Athletics Liaison will be serving as the main liaison between different Departments, the Office of Sustainability, the Student Government ECO Agency, as well as the ACC Student Athletes for Sustainability in Sports.
  • The GA Liaison will work with our Athletics Communication team to design a comprehensive Green Social-Media Strategy for the Fall.
  • The GA Liaison will research some areas of Sustainability in Sports to identify projects that would benefit the Athletics Department, and the organization as a whole.
  • The GA Liaison will collaborate with Faculty and students to create awareness events during the games, collaborating with ECO and Cat 5.

Skills required:

  • The Applicant will need to work on projects, in a very independent way, with deadlines and deliverables in mind and strong organizational skills.
  • Applicant need to be proficient in MS Office, Excel.

Other requirements:

  • The student needs to be pursuing an undergraduate degree at UM (Sports Administration, Kinesiology, Student Athletes…)
  • The student will agree to work 12 hours a week
  • The student will need to confirm that her faculty advisor agreed to award academic credits for the internship.

Interactive Media Intern

Unpaid “For Credit” or "Interactive Media Capstone project" internship position
Hours: 8 hours per week
Start Date: Aug 26, 2024 for 1 semester.

  • The office of Sustainability at UM launched a Virtual tour of our LEED certified building program in 2020. We would like to take the current platform that was made for Frost Music Studios, and use it as a framework for 2 new virtual tours of green buildings on campus: https://greenu.miami.edu/topics/green-buildings/leed-certified-buildings/index.html

  • The tour will need to have 180 degree pictures of different floors areas (180 Camera provided by the office): desks (LED lighting, recycling bins ,  trash can less desk policy …); kitchen (no single use plastic, reusable mugs…); Copy rooms (FSC certified paper, toner recycling…); hallway (VOC free painting, Recycled flooring material, screens to avoid paper flyers…); Bathroom (low flow faucet, low flow toilets…); Outdoor areas (LED lighting, Building control system…) Landscaping (Native ecosystem, smart irrigation) and a special focus on the Cypress Pond located at the South tip of the building.

  • Deliverable: an Adobe XD or Figma based virtual tour that will allow visitors to click on those features and learn more about them (Narrative and data will be provided by OS)

Skills required:

  • The Applicant will need to work on the project in a very independent way, with deadlines and deliverables in mind and strong organizational skills.
  • Applicant need to be proficient in Adobe XD or Figma.

Other requirements:

  • The student needs to be pursuing an undergraduate degree at UM (Interactive Media - School of Communication)
  • The student will agree to work 8 hours a week, and use it for credit or as a capstone project for an Interactive Media class.
