The UM Sustainability Scholar Program is a collaboration between the Office of Sustainability, the Miami Herbert Business School, the Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy, and the Department of Geography and Sustainable Development. The program’s goal is for students to further incorporate sustainability into their curriculum and cultivate leadership skills in promoting sustainability on campus and beyond. Students are encouraged to think critically about what economic, environmental, and social factors advance or inhibit long-term sustainability goals. Through each cohort of Sustainability Scholars, the Sustainability in the Curriculum Working Group hopes to generate leaders who will promote sustainable practices across disciplines for generations to come.

The program is open to all majors and completion status will appear on the student transcript. Scholars’ work will also be recognized at an annual Sustainability Showcase, during which scholars will receive their certificate of completion.

  • Complete nine (9) credits worth of courses with the SUST attribute with an average B grade.
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Submit a campus project proposal, following the Sustainability Scholar Project Guidelines , completed in 1 or 2 semesters, and supervised by a UM faculty mentor.
  • Present your project during the year-end Sustainability Showcase to a jury composed of university faculty, staff, alumni, student leaders and researchers.

  • Applicants must complete this Form (inactive until next application period)
  • Applicants will receive a formal email notification of their acceptance to the program within three weeks.
  • Once approved, a Blackboard page will be available for the student to track requirements.

Our first Scholar received the Sustainability Scholar Honor on her transcript. On top of complying with the two first requirements, Laura implemented an excellent project called My Sisters Closet.
