Building Sustainability Dashboard

This system evaluates a building’s sustainability performance across six categories, which are measured and analyzed annually. The dashboard is intended to motivate behavior change in building occupants by striving towards annual goals for resource conservation and engagement in sustainability. Use the tool and the map to compare your building's consumption over time and benchmark it against other buildings on campus.

ROOF TOP SOLAR PV

The North Studio is set to offset approx. 12.6% of its annual electricity consumption with onsite renewable energy via fixed tilt solar PV rooftop panels, rated at 50.8 kW DC (39.1 kW AC). In combination with the building's other energy efficiency improvements, the North studio uses approx. 46% less energy than typical buildings in this climate zone. The South Studio is set to offset approx. 8.9% of its annual electricity consumption with onsite renewable energy via fixed tilt solar PV rooftop panels, rated at 20.8 kW DC (16 kW AC). In combination with the building's other energy efficiency improvements, the South studio uses approx. 27% less energy than typical buildings in this climate zone.   miami.edu/renewableenergy

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS and SIGNAGE

Green Professional (GPRO) is North America’s top program for teaching the people who build, renovate and maintain buildings the principles of sustainability, combined with techniques they can use on the job the very next day.

The University of Miami GPRO Certificate Program is customized for the climate and regional needs of South Florida. Participants learn to use building metrics to reduce operating costs, improve occupancy rates and raise tenant satisfaction. This knowledge enables them to implement leading-edge practices that reduce energy, water use, and waste, plus make buildings healthier and safer for occupants.

Participants will develop expertise in:

  1. Improving the building envelope for a healthier building
  2. Reducing water usage
  3. Increasing cooling and heating system efficiency
  4. Managing lighting for minimal energy use with maximum quality
  5. Reducing waste
  6. Operational and property resilience

The GPRO Certificate Program is offered in partnership with the Urban Green Council, an affiliate of the US Green Building Council (USGBC). The course is taught by GPRO-certified UM instructors who are experienced professionals in the industry and are well-informed on sustainability issues. The program is offered through the University of Miami’s Office of Professional Advancement, in partnership with the UM College of Engineering’s Master of Science in Construction Management Program.

For more program information, please contact the Office of Professional Advancement at 305-284-4000.

SUSTAINABILITY

Renewable Energy
The solar PV panels and solar water heating system located on the flat portion of the Whitten University Center's roof, Frost North Wing 's roof and Cox Science's roof provide renewable energy reduce the need for fossil fuel based energy. Visit miami.edu/renewableenergy
Landscaping & Irrigation
With smart irrigation systems, and native and drought resistant plants, the landscaping across campus is designed to minimize the need for irrigation. Our campus has been designated Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. Visit miami.edu/nature
Rain water harvesting
A large on-site cistern captures and treats rainwater for reuse through irrigation and to flush all toilets and urinals in the building, replacing the need to use potable (drinking) water for these uses. Visit miami.edu/frostleedplatinum
Waste diversion
Single Stream Recycling receptacles made out of recycled milk jugs are located throughout buildings and campus. "Clean paper and cardboard, empty bottles and cans" signs prevent contamination. Visit miami.edu/recycle
Alternative mobility
The University of Miami has been listed among the Best Work Places for Commuters for offering exceptional alternative mobility benefits. Click here to learn more about the available mobility options.
Bike friendly campus
The University of Miami is recognized as a Bike Friendly University, at the Bronze Level, by the League of American Bicyclist. Our continuous goal is to encourage bicycling as a recreational and sustainable transportation option for our campus community. Visit miami.edu/sustainable transportation
EV charging stations
There are parking spaces and parking permit discounts for hybrid vehicles. Level 2 charging stations are available for electrical vehicles in the Merrick garage. Visit miami.edu/sustainable transportation
Recycled & Regional Materials
Using construction materials containing recycled content reduces the need for new materials. Regional materials were used whenever possible to reduce the environmental impacts of transportation and to support the regional economy. Look for building icons on miami.edu/greenmap
CO2 Scrubbers
A CO2 scrubber is installed in the Richter Library facility to scrub air of contaminants and reduce the amount of outside air ventilation required, leading to 28% energy savings. Learn more
Occupancy Sensors
Occupancy sensors are used in classrooms, academic buildings, and other multi-occupant spaces to automatically control lights and reduce energy costs when rooms are unoccupied. Visit miami.edu/energy
