Miami Herbert earns highest possible certification for sustainable operations and maintenance.
The project was recognized at the USGBC Florida Leadership and Community Awards on December 7, 2023. The team at Miami Herbert Business School started this journey in 2019 under the leadership of the previous Dean and Blanca Ripoll-Garcia to create and launch a Sustainable Business Master's program, while walking-the-walk by achieving LEEDv4 O+M Platinum certification, with the support of the Green U team led by Teddy L'Houtellier, the hard work of everyone at the Facilities and Operations team.
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), a preeminent organization assessing sustainable building practices, recently awarded the University of Miami Patti and Allan Herbert Business School building its highest rating for existing buildings: a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum Certification for Operations and Maintenance (O&M).

The Miami Herbert Business School, located on the University of Miami Coral Cables campus, has achieved LEED Gold Certification for Existing Building Operations & Maintenance (EBOM) as designated by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) for its environmental performance and sustainable operations. The project is the first LEED v4.1 OM higher-education building in the State of Florida. The building is located at 5250 University Drive, Coral Gables, Florida. The joint announcement by the University of Miami and The Spinnaker Group notes significant performance highlights of the 163,885 square foot facility. The project encompassed the facility that had been expanded on since its original 1982 opening date. Sustainable design accomplishments include: “This project is a true demonstration of the possibilities and capabilities of existing buildings and the efficiency of the newly launched LEED v4.1 for Existing Buildings,” said Jonathan Burgess, Principal of The Spinnaker Group. “We enjoyed working with the talented professionals from the University and the supporting vendors and contractors working at the Business School. Our integrated team approach significantly reduced the project’s environmental footprint and achieved noteworthy turnaround time.
